Tony Jones ’89

Heavy Weight for SF State

Tony Jones has one of the most inspiring stories of any wrestler. Coach Anastasio often told his teams Tony’s story to help teach his wrestlers that hard work and determination can make you great. Tony struggled as a freshman and sophomore in high school losing every match by a pin in the first round except for when he went the distance and lost in his last JV match as a Sophomore. Tony trained hard during the offseason and filled in his tall frame. After being cut from football two years in a row, he made the JV Squad and won the MVP award. After the start of Tony’s Junior year wrestling season, he becomes the starting Varsity Wrestler as the other guys were injured. At practice learned to master one move, the cradle. It was also the first year that wrestlers were given a choice in the rounds so he could pick top. In his first Varsity tournament, he wins his first ever wrestling match and finishes that season as a 500 wrestler. His Senior year he played Varsity Football as a starter and he had a great wrestling season as he won the WCAL, took 2nd in the CCS ( losing in overtime in the finals), and qualified for the State Championships.

Tony went to San Francisco State University and completed four years on the team and started many matches, placed in several tournaments, and beat a returning DI National Champ and eventual World Champ and NFL player, Steven Neal, in a Dual meet to clinch a victory for SF State in a Dual competition. Tony was nationally ranked as a Senior at SF State.
After SF State Tony pursued a childhood dream to wrestle in Professional Wrestling and he took on the name, Tony “The Shooter” Jones. Shooter referred to the fact that he had a Scholastic Wrestling background. Tony climbed pretty high in status, especially in Japan. He had a significant role in the Documentary, Beyond the Mat.
