Coach Steve Swanson

Head Coach 1979-1987 Assistant Coach 1988-1989
51-54 Overall Record 21-10 League Record
9 Years as Head Coach – 10 Years total coaching

Coach Steve Swanson was the original head wrestling coach of the wrestling team at Riordan. This article was written for future magazine in 1989 by, Vittorio Anastasio, his former student, wrestler, good friend, and protege who trained under him and took over the wrestling program.

Former English teacher and wrestling coach Steve Swanson passed away on October 21, 1989, following a long illness. Originally from New Jersey, Steve received his Bachelor’s degree in English from Rutgers University and his teaching credential and Masters in English from San Francisco State University.

Mr. Swanson began teaching English at Riordan in 1978 and soon became the Head of the English Department. His Senior Literature class is remembered by many graduates as one of their most memorable experiences at Riordan. He used Beowolf to the Beatles for poetry, and opened his students minds with such unconventional literary works such at Slaughterhouse Five and One Flew Over the Cukoo’s Nest. He had an innovative teaching style and his love for the subject matter was transferred to his students. He published the poetry, prose and short stories of his Senior Writing class in the Literary Magazine, which he edited and published each year.

Steven Swanson was more than just a fine teacher. He was a teacher who really cared about each and every student and spent much of his free time reaching out to students on a personal level. One way he did this through his involvement with the retreat program at Riordan. He was a leader on numerous Kairos retreats and spent five summers with Riordan student leaders at the LIFE leadership retreats run by the Marianist Province of the Pacific. Another way he reached out to students was to take his teaching beyond the walls of the classroom. Many of his former students fondly recall how he would take 75 to100 Senior Literature students to a Saturday matinee and pizza to reinforce concepts learned in the classroom. Finally, his care and personal involvement with students inspired him to pursue a career in counseling. He became a part-time counselor at Riordan and when he died was very near completing his Masters Degree in Counseling at San Francisco State University.

One of Mr. Swanson’s greatest joys at Riordan High School was the Wrestling Team. He started the wrestling program in 1979 and built the program from one wrestler to a team with over 50 students participating. His first wrestler, Adam Cohen, was a two-time CCS champion, State placer and eventual NCAA finalist at Arizona State University. Mr. Swanson went on to coach ten league champions and six CCS placers. He made his team tough with a very competitive schedule, traveling throughout the State and beyond to seek the best competition possible. Riordan Wrestlers traveled to Las Vegas, Reno, and Hawaii and were always a well-respected and extremely competitive team . Even though he retired from coaching in 1988 to pursue his counseling degree, he still remained involved in the wrestling program. He helped out the new coach with the administration of the team and he enthusiastically did the announcing at the Crusader Classic, all the WCAL matches, and the league finals.

Mr. Swanson’s dream for Riordan Wrestling was to see its growth continue. To accomplish that dream, he wanted to build a practice facility for the team. Mr. Swanson’s parents, Alex and Julia Swanson, have set up a fund to help fulfill that dream to build a Wrestling Room.

Mr. Swanson’s warmth, wit, enthusiasm, and intelligence will surely be missed at Riordan High School. His life was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was truly a man who encompassed and inspired the Riordan spirit of Pride, Purpose, and Performance.

Ron Isola

Ron Isola was a major contributor to the wrestling program in several different ways. He was the Athletic Director who made wrestling a sport at Riordan. In 1978-1979 Adam Cohen transferred into Riordan as a sophomore and practiced with other high schools including Balboa where eventual coach John Contreras (JC) was wrestling and trained with Adam. Adam petitioned into the CCS tournament and they required a school staff member to sit in his corner. Adam’s father Julius Cohen coached Adam along side Mr. Isola. Despite not knowing a thing about wrestling, Mr. Ron Isola sat in the corner and coached Adam Cohen to a CCS Championship and 3rd Place State Finish.

As Athletic Director, Ron Isola, supported the growth of the program by helping the team obtain a Mat Room in 1990 and he helped the expansion and upgrades over the ensuing years. Isola also supported the teams growth of staff, budget, club organization, and hosting of tournaments and events. The wrestling program would have never succeeded without Ron Isola’s leadership and commitment to wrestling at Riordan.

He is married to Susan Anastasio, they have identical twin daughters and they live in San Francisco.

Coach Anastasio took what Coach Swanson started and over 5 decades built upon it with much of the same philosophy where building character and community were the top goals and the winning naturally followed if both of those aspects were done right. Vittorio Anastasio remains the CEO of the San Francisco Elite Wrestling Association which he started at Riordan in 1988 and he and his non-profit corporation continues to support and route for the Riordan Wrestling program. the Year award.

Alex Ostrovskiy

1995-2006

It’s not every day that a team can have a world class wrestler, world level coach, and Olympic Referee as part of their wrestling staff. Everyone at the highest levels of world wrestling knew and loved Ostrovskiy. Coach Vittorio Anastasio was told that Alex had just moved to the city and he reached out to him and asked him to be a ref for an international dual they were hosting at Riordan versus a Russian team. After the dual Vittorio asked Alex if he would help ref at the BAWA tournaments as Coach Anastasio was the President of the Bay Area Wrestling Association at the time. Alex joined Anastasio and his wrestlers for road trips to local and State competitions. While traveling together, Coach Anastasio and the Team bonded with Alex and asked him to be an assistant coach which he did for ten years. He had some health challenges so he stepped away from being a full-time assistant but always came out to visit practices and local competitions to support the team.

Coach Anastasio has many fond memories of Coach Ostrovskiy. One of his fondest memories was having dinner at Alex’s home. He had some of his friends over which included Aleksandr Vasiliyevich Medved one of the greatest wrestlers in the world, Ivan Sergeyevich Yarygin two time Olympic Champion, undefeated in the world for 10 years in a row, and one of the winningest world level coaches of all time, just months before his untimely death, and Sergei Beloglazov the a multi-time World and Olympic Champion and active World Level Coach, just to name a few of folks there. Above all of his accomplishments and accolades, it was Coach Ostrovskiy’s world-class charm and warmth that made him such a loved and respected person.

Below is a story written about Coach Ostrovskiy by John Murphy Prep2Prep.com . April 14, 2016

Archbishop Riordan, wrestling community mourns passing of former Crusader coach, ex-Soviet wrestler, referee Archbishop Riordan High wrestling and the wrestling community in general is mourning the passing of Abraham (Alex) Ostrovskiy who died in his sleep at his San Francisco home on Monday night.

Said a Riordan social media post regarding the Russian immigrant and former Crusader assistant coach: “We were blessed to have had Abram (Alex) Ostrovskiy as a coach for a decade and as a friend and fan for many more years. It is with sadness we announce his passing but it is with gratitude we appreciate the opportunity to have known such and amazing and inspirational man.”

A picture Prep2Prep has located on the Internet of Ostrovskiy shows a diminutive, chiseled man with a deadly serious countenance. He began his wrestling career in his native Soviet Union, survived the Nazi invasion during World War II and was a member of the Soviet team in the mid-1950s.

He competed and coached internationally and became known for his superior technical wrestling and later received high rankings as a wrestling official both in his homeland and later in the United States after arriving here more than 35 years ago.

Wrote “Wrestlers Without Borders” of Ostrovskiy: “The walls of his modest apartment are covered with animal hoofs and horns, ceremonial swords and numerous other awards – the honors bestowed up him by tournaments and organizations across the globe.”

Former longtime Riordan wrestling coach Vittorio Anastasio, now the school’s principal, met Ostrovskiy at a meet in the early 1990s, one thing led to another and Ostrovskiy became a Riordan assistant coach.

“We’d bring him to tournaments and the kids liked him so he became an assistant,” Anastasio said. “He was able to practice his English and help the team and also referee on an international level. He was a highly recognized referee.”

Failing health hindered Ostrovskiy in recent years but, even after a heart attack, he was back on the mat officiating n a matter of weeks.

“He was just a tough guy,” Anastasio said. “We feel happy and blessed to have known him. He had some phenomenal stories about being a Russian Jew and living in Russia during World War II and being separated from his family and how he didn’t speak until age 8 because of all the trauma he went through. That’s why it was good for him to get involved in wrestling because it created a new family for him.”
